Why Jon Jones Nickname is Bones?
Jon Jones is arguably one of the biggest superstars in the history of UFC. Often regarded as the GOAT of MMA, Jones has been fighting legends when he was a young man and has dismantled huge names inside the octagon. Popularly known as ‘Bones’, the fighter’s nickname is quite a unique one to consider. However, it does have a good story behind it.
For most of his UFC career, Jones fought in the light heavyweight division and currently has made a move to the Heavyweight division. However, the fighter wasn’t bulked up in his younger days. According to Jones, when he was playing football in his Endicott High School team, his coaches and team members used to call him bony for his thin frame.
“I was like 6 feet 4 [inches], which is the same height I am now but I was like 170 [lbs], now I’m 230,” said Jones in an interview at UFC 165. “So, I was way skinnier and I was on the football team. Whenever I would get down in my football stance, I just had these wicked skinny legs and I was just all ‘bony’”
While the name ‘Bones‘ sounds both strange and intimidating, things would have been different if Jones would have chosen another nickname that the fighter had in his mind.

Jones should be thanking his coach and football friends who helped him get the nickname ‘Bones’. In 2020, Jones made a tweet where the fighter revealed how he used to have an alternate fight nickname “sexual chocolate”.

According to Jones, he chose to go with the nickname in order to show his respect for his old football team. Unlike his brothers who played in the NFL, Jones switched sports and pursued his career in MMA and decided to continue his nickname.
“So everyone went with Bones. And when I started my MMA career, I thought it would be to have a tribute to my hometown by naming myself, “ said Bones. Now Jones is no longer the skinny kid but a beast who has already conquered the MMA octagon and is still going with full force.
